Assessing the effectiveness of guidance and counselling in St. Joseph’s college of education – Bechem

Abstract

The main aim of the study was to find out whether St. Joseph's College of Education’s Guidance and Counselling programme is effectively run and based on the findings make the necessary recommendations to improve the programme. Descriptive research design was used for the study, in which questionnaires were used to collect data. Frequencies and percentages were used to organise the data in tables. These helped in answering the six research questions posed. The target population for the study was made up of students of all the three year groups (DBE1, DBE2 and DBE3) of St. Joseph’s College of Education, all the tutors of the college and the guidance and counselling co-ordinator of the college. The sample size was made up of the guidance and counselling co-ordinator (1), 20 tutors and 20 students from each of the year groups (DBE 1, DBE 2 and DBE 3) giving a total of 60 students. The total sample size for the study therefore was 81. The findings from the study revealed that there were certain constraints like, lack of office accommodation insufficient logistics, improper awareness creation among others which rendered the guidance and counselling programme of the college in question not as effective as expected. In this regard, recommendations made were, reduction of the counsellor's work schedule to enable him have much attention for the guidance and counselling programme, provision of counselling office and logistics, in-service training for the tutors, awareness creation and others.
