Abstract:
The main motivation for this research was the researcher’s desire to know the
career decision-making difficulties of Senior High School (S.H.S) students in
Koforidua Municipality. The descriptive survey method was employed for
conducting the study. The multi-stage sampling technique was used to select a
sample of 364 senior high school students from Koforidua Municipality. Data
were collected mainly by the use of an adapted questionnaire. Means, standard
deviation, frequency counts, rank order, t-test and analysis of variance were
used in the analysis of data. The study found that dysfunctional myths were
the most prevailing difficulties that senior high school students encountered in
their career decision-making. Also, there was no significant difference in
S.H.S students’ career decision-making difficulties on the basis of their
preferred careers. There was no significant difference in S.H.S students’ career
decision-making on the basis of their programme of study, and on the basis of
their class. In view of the findings, it was recommended that the Ministry of
Education should make room for more counsellors at Senior High School level
who would champion the cause of career guidance. Also, school counsellors
have been enjoined to make conscious efforts to demystify students’
dysfunctional career myths which have been found in the study to be their
most prevailing career decision-making difficulties
