Abstract:
Translation as a discipline may be perceived in two ways: first, this may be executed solely as a professional activity; second, it may be done as a means of learning a foreign language. A foreign language, for example, French may be acquired through the activities of translation. Over the years, it has been observed that final year students in French as Foreign Language still perform very poorly in translation, particularly, when translating from English into French. A careful perusal of some of the texts produced by the students reveals that they still make certain grievous and unpardonable errors; notably, choice of translation procedures, confusion in semantic values and choice of lexical items. Thus, the study sought to examine errors in relation to translation units in the translations of final year students of the department of French in UCC, using the comparative stylistics framework of Vinay & Darbelnet (1995) and the theory of error analysis of Gass & Selinker (2008). It sought to look at the influence that English as a second language has on the studies of French as a foreign language.
